The Village Support

“Secure your own oxygen mask before helping others”.

We hear this all the time, but how do we actually follow this important advice? As parents and carers of ND kids, we build our whole lives around them, because we love them so much. We do everything within our means to support them. We take them to therapy sessions (lots of them), we advocate for them at kinder or school, we adjust our lives and routines to make it as manageable as possible. Most of the supports we seek are designed for our kids.

We work hard day in and day out, but there is little support for us. Takes A Village has created a number of support offerings that address many of the common issues families like us face.

These include:

  • Coming to terms with diagnosis and what happens now? - Siblings and family dynamics

  • Coping with challenging behaviours. - Reactions of families and relatives

  • Dealing with school and childcare providers - Dealing with judgement and grief

  • Jugging work and negotiating flexible arrangements

  • Finding ways to manage personal stress
